Are You Led by a Manager? Here's How to Tell

Do you always feel like you have to be productive?
Do you beat yourself up over small mistakes?
Do you constantly worry about how others perceive you?

If so, you might be led by a Manager.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), Managers are parts of us that try to keep life under control. They often work hard behind the scenes to prevent failure, rejection, or emotional pain. They mean well—but when they take over, you can feel rigid, anxious, or never “good enough.”

In this post, we’ll explore what Manager parts look like, how to recognize when they’re running the show, and how to gently shift into a more balanced state—with the help of journaling.

🧠 What Is a Manager in IFS?

Managers are proactive parts. Their job is to manage how we show up in the world and avoid anything that might trigger our more vulnerable parts (called Exiles in IFS).

They try to keep things safe and predictable—often by controlling, criticizing, overworking, or people-pleasing.

Common Manager strategies:

  • Perfectionism (“If I do this perfectly, I’ll be safe.”)
  • Overthinking (“If I plan everything, nothing will go wrong.”)
  • Inner criticism (“If I beat myself up first, no one else can hurt me.”)
  • People-pleasing (“If everyone’s happy with me, I won’t be rejected.”)

The problem? These strategies come at a cost: burnout, anxiety, and disconnection from your real needs.

🚨 Signs You’re Being Led by a Manager

Here’s how to tell a Manager part might be in charge:

  • You feel like you have to keep it all together
  • You’re exhausted but still pushing yourself
  • You get annoyed when others are “lazy” or disorganized
  • You’re hard on yourself, even when you’ve done your best
  • You avoid slowing down, resting, or being vulnerable

Managers often fear what might happen if they don’t stay in control. And while their intentions are protective, they often silence or suppress the softer parts of you that need care.

✍️ Journaling Prompt: Meet Your Manager

A great way to begin building a relationship with your Manager part is through journaling.

Try this:

“Is there a part of me that’s working really hard to keep things under control? What is it afraid would happen if it stopped?”

Then, write from that Manager’s perspective. Let it speak. You might be surprised at what it’s trying to protect you from.

🧘‍♀️ What to Do When a Manager Is Leading

  1. Notice it without judgment
Managers aren’t bad—they’re protective. Simply noticing their presence is the first step toward healing.

  2. Get curious instead of critical
Ask: “What is this part worried about?” That question alone often softens a Manager.

  3. Invite in Self energy
When you lead with calm, compassion, and curiosity, your Manager part often feels safe enough to relax.

When you recognize a Manager part is leading, you don’t need to fight it—you just need to listen, understand, and gently take the lead back.

That’s where healing begins.
