Self Energy: What It Is & How to Access It
If you’ve ever had a moment of calm in the middle of chaos, or felt deeply compassionate toward yourself without trying—that’s Self energy.
In Internal Family Systems (IFS), Self energy is the foundation of healing, balance, and clarity. But what exactly is it? And how do you access more of it in daily life?
This post breaks it down simply—no spiritual jargon, no fluff—just a grounded look at what Self energy is, and how to invite more of it through reflection and journaling.
✨ What Is Self Energy?
Self energy is the natural state of your true Self—the core of who you are when you’re not being hijacked by stress, fear, or inner criticism.
In IFS, it’s described with 8 C-words:
Calm, Curious, Compassionate, Confident, Creative, Connected, Courageous, and Clear.
When you're in Self, you’re not dominated by any one part of you (like the inner critic, the avoider, or the anxious achiever). You're able to listen to those parts without becoming them.
Self isn’t something you create—it’s something you access once your protective parts feel safe enough to step back.
🧠 Why It Matters
When you're in Self energy, everything shifts.
You can:
- Hear your anxious part without panicking
- Comfort your inner critic instead of arguing with it
- Make choices from a place of grounded clarity, not reaction
And when your parts feel that calm leadership? They relax. They trust. And you get to lead.
That’s why Self energy is at the heart of all healing in IFS.
🔑 How to Access Self Energy
Self is always there—it’s just often covered by noise. Here's how to begin connecting with it:
1. Notice who’s speaking
Ask yourself:
“Is this a part of me speaking—or my Self?”
If you’re feeling frantic, judgmental, or desperate to fix something, it’s probably a part. That’s not wrong—but it means Self might not be in the driver’s seat yet.
2. Breathe and pause
Just taking a few breaths can help you shift from reacting to noticing. This makes space for Self energy to emerge.
3. Be curious, not controlling
Try asking:
“What is this part afraid of? What does it need right now?”
The act of curiosity itself often signals that Self is present.
4. Journal from Self
One of the most powerful ways to access Self is through guided journaling.
Try this prompt:
“Can I invite any parts to step back for a moment, so I can just listen?”
Then notice what comes up—and write from that calm, curious place.
